Background on the Symposium
In 2005, Terry Clarke, Education Director of Onion Lake, Saskatchewan got together with his colleagues to discuss the idea of having a Western Canada First Nations Education Symposium. They brought together Principals, Administrators, Education Directors and other leaders in First Nations education from First Nations Schools in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to come together to share ideas, network and build capacity with one another. Approximately 65 delegates attended the two day event.

The 2nd Western Canada First Nations Education Administrator's Symposium was held at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton, Alberta from February 9 - 11, 2006. This event was hosted by the MIYO Wahkohtowin Community Education, Treaty 7 area. In addition to the Education Symposium, they added one day for an Aboriginal Language Symposium. Over 135 delegates, including Aboriginal Language Teachers, Principals, Education Directors, and other leaders in Aboriginal languages and Education, attended this three day symposium.

First Nations Training & Consulting Services was invited to bid on hosting the 3rd Western Canada First Nations Education Administrator's Symposium. Edith Loring-Kuhanga, President submitted a bid to MIYO Education at the end of January 2006 and attended the Education Symposium in February 2006 to discuss her bid. Edith was honoured to be selected to organize the 3rd Symposium.

This year, the symposium is open to First Nations Schools as well as Educators, Principals, and Directors of Aboriginal Education from the public schools. In addition, the Symposium will also be featuring the Aboriginal Language Symposium and the Education Symposium. This year, we are expecting 200 delegates from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon. Plan on attending this timely and worthwhile event.
