About Sponsorship
The 5th Annual Aboriginal Youth, Violence & Changing Times Training Conference is a four-day Conference for youth, youth workers and people who live with youth. The Conference features workshops for both youth and youth workers, entertainment, an opportunity to participate in the life-changing PARTY Program (Preventing Alcohol Related Trauma to Youth) and cultural and sports activities. Sponsorship is available for all Aboriginal youth – First Nations, Metis, Inuit, non-Status and on-reserve from across Canada to attend the Conference.

Who is Eligible for Sponsorship
Sponsorship is available for all Aboriginal youth – First Nations, Metis, Inuit, non-Status and on-reserve from across Canada to attend the Conference.

Five Aboriginal youth (15 to 25 years of age) from each province and territory are eligible for full sponsorship to attend the conference. Each youth delegate must submit an application for sponsorship which will be reviewed by the Conference’s National Advisory Committee. All delegates 19 years of age and under are required to bring a chaperone with them. The Conference fee will be waived for chaperones, but they will be responsible for their own travel expenses.

What’s Included
The sponsored delegates who are from outside of the Greater Victoria area will receive the following:
    • Meals: The following meals will be reimubursed: 3 Breakfasts and 2 Dinners. Lunches and refreshments will be provided on site for all 3 days.
    • Conference Registration including 1 ticket for the Banquet and Entertainment Evening
    • Accommodation: a maximum of 3 nights double accommodation - depending on where you are travelling to and from. Arrangements will be made for the sponsored delegates to stay at one of the Conference hotels. You will be responsible for paying for additional people in your room, incidentals and any additional nights. Your names will be put on the Rooming List and we will book your accommodation directly with the hotel. Private accommodation will be reimbursed at a rate of $20.00 per night.
    • Transportation: If you are flying to and from Victoria, you will be reimbursed for Shuttle Service between the Victoria Airport and your hotel only. Original Receipts are required.
    • Mileage: For sponsored delegates who are travelling by vehicle, you will be reimbursed for your mileage at a rate of $ 0.32 per kilometer to and from the Conference location only. If you are able to fly but choose to drive, you will be reimbursed for whatever is the lowest between the mileage or an excursion air fare.
    • Air Flight Arrangements: Flight arrangements will be made for sponsored delegates who have to travel by air in order to attend the conference. Your excursion flight will be booked by First Nations Training & Consulting Services through our travel agent. Your flight arrangements must be completed by February 23, 2007.
    • Sponsored delegates living within the Greater Victoria area will receive the following: Conference Registration including 1 ticket for the Banquet and Entertainment Evening, Lunches and refreshments on site for all 3 days.

How to Apply
Please submit an application essay which is a minimum of one page and a maximum of two typed pages long by email to office@fntcs.comThe essay must include:
  1. Your name, address, phone number, fax, email and the name and address of the chaperone who will accompany you if you are under 19 years of age.
  2. A brief introduction to yourself: your age, your schooling, and your interests.
  3. Why you should be selected: why you want to attend the conference and what you hope to gain from attending the conference.
  4. In addition, applications should include two letters supporting your application from a teacher, Band Chief or Councillor, social worker, school councillor, community health representative or nurse, youth worker, sports coach or other community member who is familiar with you.

Selection
Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the Screening Committee. Sponsored youth will be selected based on the following criteria:
    • Academic achievement
    • Financial need
    • High-risk
    • Disabilities
    • Contribution to your family
    • Contribution to your community
    • Cultural and language involvement
    • Sports
    • Extra curricular activities

Deadline to apply-Deadline Has Been Extended!
Applications must be received by email to fntcs@telus.net by 4:00 pm (B.C. Time) February 2, 2007. Successful delegates will be notified by February 16, 2007.
