Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills Certification - Level 1
This training provides the basic skills to help people who
misuse commercial tobacco products to quit.
The one-day training includes:
- An
overview of the harmful effects of commercial tobacco
- How
traditional tobacco differs from commercial tobacco
- The
skills to meet with individuals and assess their readiness
to quit commercial tobacco products
- How
to assist a client who wants to quit using a simple Quit
Plan
- The
skills needed to give a short group presentation about commercial
tobacco use in First Nations communities
Completion of this training prepares you to:
- Identify
a client's readiness to quit misusing commercial tobacco
products and know how to deliver brief individual interventions
to help people who are either ready or not ready to quit
- Assist
a client in creating a simple quit plan and refer the client
to more intensive services
- Give
simple advice and instruction on the uses and limitations
of nicotine replacement products
This training
is for people who wish to provide tobacco cessation services
through their jobs or through social or community networks.
Participants who complete the training successfully will receive
a Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills Certificate.

Level 2 is Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills Instructors Training
and will be available for those who want to teach Basic Tobacco

BASIC
TOBACCO AND TREATMENT SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION
Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills Certification - Level 3
This training is designed for people who want to provide intensive
tobacco cessation services. (Prerequisite: Level 1)
The one day training, Level 3, is conducted online through
the University of Arizona where learners can complete the
course at their own pace and use the website resources.
Completion of this training prepares you to:
- Provide
brief interventions and follow up
- Provide
intensive services to help people quit commercial tobacco
products while working within an existing program
- Be
a resource for other health service professionals regarding
tobacco issues
In addition, participants will receive one day of information
on a variety of successful strategies and programs that
will assist them in designing and implementing tobacco programs
and services right in their own communities.
"Train
the Trainer" Training is available for people interested
in becoming Basic Intervention Skills Instructors (Level 2)
and Tobacco Cessation Specialist Instructors (Level 4).
